The Community Legal Assistance Society (“CLAS”) is seeking a lawyer committed to social justice of between 1 and 5 years of call to join our BC Human Rights Clinic. This is a full-time position on a temporary 13-month contract commencing July 2025, with the possibility of a further six-month extension.

Located on the unceded territories of the ʷməθkʷəy̓ əm (Musqueam), Sḵwx̱wú7mesh (Squamish), and səlilwətaɬ (Tsleil-Waututh) Nations in what is now known as Vancouver, CLAS provides free legal services to disadvantaged people throughout British Columbia through its various programs, including: the Mental Health Law Program, Community Advocate Support Line, Community Law Program, SHARP Workplaces Program, Stand Informed Legal Advice Program, and the BC Human Rights Clinic.

The BC Human Rights Clinic (the “Clinic”) is a CLAS program comprised of lawyers and legal advocates who assist and represent complainants throughout the province with human rights complaints filed with the BC Human Rights Tribunal. The Clinic is funded by the BC Ministry of the Attorney General.

THE POSITION:
This is a full-time contract (defined term) position to provide legal assistance and representation to clients of the Clinic. Clinic lawyers are involved in all aspects of the Clinic’s work.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
 • Provide client-centered, trauma-informed legal advice and representation to complainants at all stages of the human rights complaint process;
• Advise complainants on properly framing their complaints under the BC Human Rights Code;
• Advise complainants of their rights and appropriate remedies under the Code;
• Staff the Clinic’s Short Service Clinic to provide members of the public with legal information, advice, and referrals to assist them with their potential human rights complaint;
• Represent clients in mediations and negotiate creative, effective, fair resolutions to human rights complaints;
• Advise clients on their disclosure obligations and prepare comprehensive evidence packages for disclosure;
• Assess the merits of complaints and prepare opinions on the strength of complaints, prospects of success, and available remedies;
• Review materials, conduct research, file amendments, and draft legal submissions and affidavits on preliminary applications filed with the Tribunal;
•  Prepare cases for hearing, including witness and expert preparation, and represent clients at Tribunal hearings of their cases.

 ABOUT YOU:
You are a practicing lawyer in good standing with the Law Society of British Columbia. You have a demonstrated commitment to social justice and human rights, and a strong desire to serve people who have experienced disadvantage with vigour, compassion, and integrity.

QUALIFICATIONS, SKILLS, AND EXPERIENCE:
• Must be a 1 to 5 year call with experience representing clients in legal proceedings;
• Strong knowledge of the litigation process with a strategic and efficient approach to cases;
• Solid knowledge of the BC Human Rights Code and human rights jurisprudence, principles of administrative law, and the law of evidence;
• Expertise in human rights issues and an understanding of current developments in the law;
• Proven negotiating skills;
• Experience with cases involving a complex legal analysis or systemic component;
• General knowledge of employment and labour law, workers’ compensation, and other income assistance benefits;
• General knowledge of workplace issues and employment disability coverage;
• Understanding of and sensitivity to the particular needs of marginalized clients;
• Ability to communicate effectively with CLAS’ diverse clientele and with people facing disadvantages such as a physical or mental disability.

COMPENSATION:
 CLAS offers an excellent employment package including extended health benefits and a pension plan, generous vacation and paid sick days, and bonus days off during the winter holiday season. CLAS currently has a hybrid work model of working remotely as well as in the office. Starting salary range is between $66,815 - $75,195, depending on year of call.

START DATE:
The preferred start date for this position is July 2025.
